Reclaiming the Soul

My title and blog today are inspired by Paul Krugman’s column in the International Herald Tribune “Reclaiming America’s Soul”. Paul here is talking about the crisis of torture and justifications of war that the Bush administration had perpetrated. Now, according to me, it just adds up to the pattern. In the economic crisis, we have had Chief Executives of companies committing acts in collusion with bureaucracy and wall street. And now, everyone wants to erase that chapter and stand judgement on a president who is trying to establish a new world order. This is a global phenomena of opportunism, selfish greed and instant gratification with least respect for conscience, values and principles. It is reflected in every day life, be it governance, politics or business. The Mission Statements mean nothing to company chief executives as long as they achieve the quarter on quarter projections. That is right…the operative word is projections. Something they contrive and achieve. It has got nothing to do with either potential or the prospects of the future. They don’t have the time to engage in understanding the causality of the business performance because they are busy fixing the causes. Like George Bush who fixed the cause for going to war with Iraq and committed the American Country, its brave soldiers and its tax paying public to years of hardship, sacrifice and now imminent desperation.

Like Paul Krugman recommends, we should take this seriously and prosecute those responsible for leading the society to the brink of desperation; or institute new terms for reference for leadership that will change the landscape that President Obama has been talking about. A future where our children and theirs will cherish a life based on values and virtues of accountability?

    Hi Subbu,

I like this article and especially the sentence “The Mission Statements mean nothing to company chief executives as long as they achieve the quarter on quarter projections.” …Fixing the issues as well as Projections are importnat in my view because these two things are parallel straight lines which are never meet…With my little experience i know this much….Please correct me anyone if i am wrong….
